Introduction
We think our Fulford students deserve the best guidance possible as they prepare for their steps beyond the sixth form. For some students this transition will be relatively simple because they may already know exactly what they want to do and for others it may be more complicated. Every pathway – and the journey along the way – is important and requires personalised support.
Our careers programme ensures that every student receives early support so that the final decision is well informed, exciting and ambitious. We begin the exploration of the different opportunities and destinations early in Year 12 and the support continues throughout Year 13, and even Year 14 for some of our students.
We are proud of our great record of securing the destination of choice for the vast majority of our students, whether that is studying medicine at the University of Oxford, embarking upon an Art Foundation year, volunteering in China or securing an apprenticeship at Nestlé. Every student is an individual and our careers programme is designed to support the varying needs and ambitions.
University
Majority of our students progress onto University. In 2025 53% of our Year 13 students went on to study at Russell Group universities, with a good number making early applications to Oxbridge as well competitive courses such as medicine, veterinary science and dentistry.
In many areas of life, a university degree is still an essential route. However whatever subject students decide to study, going to university will equip them with the skills that they can apply to academic work, various careers and personal life. To nurture an academic interest over several years guided by an expert in that field whilst simultaneously enjoying independence, extra-curricular activities and new friends is a wonderful opportunity. The benefits of Higher Education are endless; what students learn both inside and outside of the lecture hall will remain with them well beyond graduation day.
In our sixth form, high quality personalised guidance on how to choose the best course and university alongside a step-by-step guide to the UCAS application process will ensure that university life after Fulford gets off to the best start possible! Apprenticeship
Although majority of our students go on to university, a significant and growing number of students choose alternative pathways after they finish their Fulford journey. School leaver programmes, apprenticeships, employment and gap years are just some of the different destinations for our students.
To enhance our school-based support for students following alternative pathways, we have close links with Aviva who regularly visit school to support our students in making informed decisions about their future.
In recent years our students have successfully applied for scholarships, level 3 apprenticeships and a range of promising employment opportunities.

Every year our students move onto exciting pathways. As well as apprenticeships and universities, students go into the army and even get signed on by professional football or cycling teams. Many of our students also take a Gap year and then apply to university – and we continue to support their Year 14 applications during this time.
